EMPATHY TOWARDS ALL

A Girl Scout Gold Award project focused on strengthening empathy between all communities and police officers nationwide.

The ETA Mission

Hello, my name is Kimberly Rosell.
I am 16 years old in 11th grade at Pelham Memorial High School, NY and a Girl Scout in Pelham Troop #1662. I am currently working on my Gold Award for Girl Scouts. I have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, and have received both my Bronze and Silver awards.

For my Gold Award named “ETA,” which stands for “Empathy Towards All,” I am planning four major components which are focused on assisting the Pelham Police Departments. My intention is to build stronger bonds of empathy between community members and police officers via communication. In light of growing concerns in some communities and their respective police departments nationwide, I believe that with conscientious communication, one can reach higher levels of understanding, mutual respect and grow stronger together.

These are the four components of my Gold Award:

1.

A video documentary, titled “Empathy Towards All.”
With the assistance of my fellow Troop members, “Empathy Towards All” will feature interviews of both community members and our police officers as they explain the current concerns regarding police and community relationships nationwide. Most importantly, the documentary will cover possible solutions and plans of action from the perspectives of all interviewees. Upon completion, I will host a public screening of “Empathy Towards All” for Pelham and neighboring communities. I hope “Empathy Towards All” will set an easily-reproducible, and positive example for communities who wish to promote empathy towards all and strengthen relationships between police officers and the communities they serve.

2.

A license plate reader fundraiser for the Village of Pelham Police Department.
This fundraiser aims to purchase license plate readers for my local police department in order to keep my community safer. In situations of emergency, these can be used to keep our community and surrounding towns aware and safe. Our town lies between two highways, and this technology would help the community in dealing with Amber Alerts, hit and runs, and any other crime requiring the identification of a vehicle.

3.

Community sports events and t-shirt sales.
In order to purchase the license plate reader, I am raising funds by organizing sports-related events to strengthen positive ties between community members and police officers. In addition to these engaging, social events, I will be designing and selling t-shirts promoting “Empathy Towards All” and my Gold Award.

4.

Police Safety workshops.
By organizing safety workshops for local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops with the assistance of police officers, we can develop mutual respect and review safety protocol for the younger members of our town.

We will discuss “Cyber Safety,” “Neighborhood Safety,” and learn self-defense from a Karate instructor. Dinner will be included for all workshop participants. Also, my fellow troop members and I will create a brief bullying video with my fellow troop members that will be presented while the scouts are having dinner. To complement the content in these workshops, I will also design and sell patches for Pelham Scouts to show their participation.

Additionally, for the duration of my Gold Award, I will continue to make “Thank You” cards and bake goods to distribute at both Pelham Police Departments on special occasions such as Labor Day, Veterans Day, Holidays, et cetera.

In closing, my Gold Award mission is to strengthen bonds of empathy between all community members and police officers through respectful communication via sports events and neighborhood safety workshops.
